The Golgatha of Gaza (Good Friday?)
"Arshaad Norwood’s painting of the crucified Christ merges an awareness of the historical parallels converging at the time of His death with a contemporary appeal to a hip-hop generation. Despite dark blood stains from wounds created by the crown of thorns, the baby Jesus reveals a resigned, indeed almost joyous countenance, His eyes directed upward. An astrological clock on Christ’s chest reminds the viewer that the time of the crucifixion, now Easter for Christians, is also the spring equinox, designating in the pagan traditions the end of winter and the renewal of the earth. This same season furthermore, is Passover, the feast celebrating the release of the Israelites from Egyptian captivity. Representing the evil which caused Christ’s death are shadowing figures in the background." -Lovick P. Corn Professor of Art History Dr. Dorothy Joiner

Inauguration Piece
24x36 digital painting with acrylic embeleshment
This piece marks the embarkation of a new era within American History .
It is the embodiment of the Dream fulfilled
Martin Luther King Jr. once quoted
"To be a Negro in America is to Hope against Hope"
Being a Negro in America means trying to smile when you want to cry. It means trying to hold on to physical life amid
psychological death. It means the pain of watching your children grow up with clouds of inferiority in their mental skies. It means
having your legs cut off, and then being condemned for being a cripple. It means seeing your mother and father spiritually
murdered by the slings and arrows of daily exploitation, and then being hated for being an orphan."
Although 44 years later we still have reoccurring social issues of inequality and injustice we have taken a triumphant step as a nation. no longer is the American dream an intangible object.
No longer do African Americans have to dream of an illusive ancient land of ultimate prosperity and stature. Together President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have resurrected a new precedence, a new Sanguine for all of America and have instilled that Hope in us all once more.
